Aloha everyone and Happy New Year! Tonight lava was visible at the top of the Royal Gardens subdivision. A large breakout could be seen from the public viewing area in Kalapana. Also breakouts on the middle of the Royal Gardens subdivision could also be seen. Tours may be available on January 3, 2012 on. We will first be scouting the area to find a safe vantage point. Guests must be above adequate or excellent hikers.

The Electronic Tilt Meter on the Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory website recorded minor inflation and deflation. Lava is still flowing in the tube system. Even on deflation, Lava still could be seen in Kalapana. We will be anticipating a inflation in the next 48 hours. The next inflation will increase the Royal Gardens breakout.

This picture was taken a little over a month ago. This is the same area of where the Royal Gardens breakout is being reported. This picture was taken just a week before the new west Ka ili’il ocean entry. This was the beginning of the new lava flow in Kalapana.
