June 17, 2012 Lava Update

Aloha! What a windy night tonight was. Even with the wind our groups were able to safely able to get up close to view surface flows.

The leading edge of the flow has advanced more and is getting closer to the ocean.  Up on the Pali, the surface flow has advanced and could be seen burning parts of a small kipuka(Forest surrounded by lava). The leading edge is approximately .5 miles away from the ocean. Inflation had started earlier today and deflation is expected to occur in the next day or so. The leading edge had take a turn to the east towards the Kalapana area and moving easterly. Hiking distance tonight was approximately 2.9 miles each way. Hiking time was about 1:50 minutes each way. Well aloha and have a safe day. Mahalo and until next time, Aloha!
