Aloha! While everyone was worrying about the end of the world we were doing our Guided Lava Hikes out to the surface flows on the coastal plains. The ocean entry had stalled completely a few days ago and has not started up since. There are surface flows above the ocean entry that we were able to get up close to (safely of course). Along the entire flow field there were many surface flows visible. The tiltmeter at Pu’u O’o is recording an ongoing DI inflation and the activity reflects this inflation.
Up on the Pali, there is a surface flow that is visibly advancing down the hillside. This surface breakout is at the top of the abandoned Royal Gardens Subdivision. This flow can also be seen from afar at the Kalapana Lava Viewing area. The overall activity is good. Until next post, Aloha!
