January 07, 2013 Guideed Lava Hike

Aloha Folks! The activity had picked up and there was a lot of lava to be seen. Surface flows were within the area and our groups were able to safely get up close to them. The ocean entry was awesome and the sunset was beautiful, which made for amazing photos. The tilt meter has been recording an ongoing inflation and the rise in activity can be seen. However, when we had the ongoing deflation, which started over a week ago, the activity was still very good.

The ocean is very rough at this time, so no boat tours were on the high seas. Up on the Pali, the surface flow that was once visible prior to the ongoing deflation has stalled out completely. This surface flow was a large one and very wide, making for a nice view from the Kalapana Lava Viewing area. The overall activity is very good and viewing is also good at this time. Until next post, Aloha!
