February 19, 2013 Guided Lava Walk

Aloha Folks! Tonight was  much better weather wise than the past two days. We cancelled February 17 & 18 because of the bad weather. Excessive or heavy rain on the still hot/warm lava creates what is called “White Out”. When a white out occurs there is a large amount of steam that is generated. One can get trapped in this steam because of poor visibility and being in steam is not such a great idea. The activity was very good tonight as our groups were able to see surface flows and the ocean entry safely. There are still multiple points of lava that are entering the ocean across a .25 mi wide area. All the while creating more land. Great night, overall. Until next time, Aloha!
