February 23, 2013 Guided Lava Tours

Aloha! Tonight’s tours were cancelled because of the continuous flash flood rains. Conditions like these are a recipe for injuries. Rough lava terrain and rain do not mix because the surface of the lava becomes slippery and the chances for falling increases. Once excessive amounts of rain hit the hot lava the resulting combination creates excessive amounts of steam or a “White Out”. Visibility drops by a lot and hiking around in steam isn’t a great idea as well as not so safe. The flash flood watch is in effect until tonight, but may continue until the morning. Hopefully it will clear up by morning. Until tomorrow, Aloha!
