March 01, 2013 Guided Lava Hike

Aloha! We had an awesome time last night. We were able to safely view both the surface flow and the ocean entry. Once we got to the surface flow there was a nice breakout that occurred. This breakout started to flow out from a small tumulus off to the side of our group. After staying here for a while we made our way to the ocean entry, where we were met with an awesome view.

The new ocean entry that had started a few days ago got bigger and was very active. There were multiple breakouts that happened while we were viewing this awesome sight. Wave after wave crashed onto the rocks and flowing lava. The ocean water stalled the flows for just a second, but they would keep flowing as if nothing happened. Everyone just sat and watched without saying much, although some were taking photos. Just seeing this phenomenon seemed to have a calming effect on everyone. Up on the Pali the surface flow that was visible for the past few days could still be seen and looked to be still be active. To make things better, the weather was beautiful, which made the evening successful. Till next time, Aloha!
