Guided Lava Hike-May 31, 2013

Aloha. Activity at the ocean entry as well as the surface flows have increased. The ocean entry is still flowing regardless of the recent bench collapses. We saw lava flowing down the cliff and creating a new ocean entry point. This flow was starting off as a pahoehoe flow, but as it made it’s way to the cliff bottom it was becoming an A’a flow. The surface flows were extremely active and was very close where we where near the ocean entry. This made for an awesome, awesome night. The surface flows were beautiful and there were multiple big breakouts. We were able to get close to most of these breakouts.  Near the base of the Pali  we could see a surface flow, but higher on the Pali the surface flows have seemed to stall and only a few red dots could be seen. Overall activity at this time is very good. Aloha!

May 30, 2013 Lava Hike Update

Aloha everyone! The ocean entry closest to us continued to be stunning. Lava could be seen flying into the air as littoral explosions would occur every so often. There have been many small bench collapses that has made the Delta  or lava bench smaller. These collapses can be extremely explosive and no one should be on or near the bench area because it could collapse at any time and without warning. We were able to safely get close to surface flows as well.  The surface flow we saw was very close to the ocean entry and allowed us to view both without having to do much more hiking. We saw multiple breakouts that were very active and awesome to see. Not only did we get to see lava up close, but we got to feel the heat, and hear the crackling and popping as the lava made it’s way along the surface. Incredible. Until next time, stay safe, Aloha!

May 29 ,2013 Lava Tour Update

Aloha everyone! Lava activity was just awesome. The ocean entry viewing was also amazing. The most eastern flow was the most active one at this time. Lava continued to enter into the ocean in two distinct entry points. The other is located south of the Volcanoes National Park boundary. The southern entry point is also very active but hard to get to. Also we were able to get up to some breath taking surface flows. All of our guests were just amazed by it’s mysterious flow patterns and the way it moves. The surface activity were safely approachable and easy to get up to. Come and join us. Aloha!

Beautiful cascading rivers of Lava continued to create a newly formed Lava bench. Awesome explosions of Lava has made viewing breath taking last night. Awesome surface activity also. Nice little oozing of molten lava right next to your feet. All of our guests were just amazed by the tour. Book a tour now while the Lava is Flowing. Mahalo!

May 27, 2013-Guided Lava Hike

Aloha Folks! Tonight’s tour was awesome and the weather was great too. The wind was blowing the steam away from the ocean entry enough that we had an obstructed view of lava flowing into the ocean. Since the bench collapsal last week the ocean entry can be seen much easier and at a better angle. Surface flows were also great as multiple breakouts could be seen and we were able to safely get up close and personal. The surface flow on the Pali has advanced and spread out slightly. Overall activity was great and our guests had a great time. Book your tour now to experience this for yourself, Aloha!

May 25, 2013-Guided Lava Hike

Aloha! Our tour was awesome because of the activity that we saw. Although there was a deflation, the ocean entry and surface flows were really active. The lava bench had collapsed further and is extremely active. Waves continue to pummel the ocean entry points, slowing them down slightly, but after a short time lava breaks out again and continues to pour into the Pacific Ocean. The surface flows were awesome as well. All of our groups were able to safely get up close to surface flowing lava. Breakouts would occur then stall and inflate and another breakout would happen shortly after. Great night! To top it all off the sunset was Beautiful. Yes, I used a capital B. The sunset at the lava was that good. Until next time, Aloha!

May 24, 2013 Lava Hike Update

Aloha everyone! Welcome to another addition to our daily blog. Lava activity remained elevated at this time. Currently at the summit of Kilauea, the electronic tilt meter, which measures the ground tilt of the volcano, has deflated for the moment. Deflation will occur in the next couple of days. The ocean entry has been very active at this time. Multiple entries could be seen on our tour. The most eastern entry has been the best entry at this time. About 2 acres of the Lava bench had collapsed into the ocean. This event happens quite often, but in this case this is a rare event because of the size of the area. Surface activity was also amazing. Beautiful little rivers of lava just inches away from your feet. Aloha and stay tune for our next update. Mahalo!

May 22, 2013

Aloha Folks! We had cancelled our tours yesterday because of the winds, but we did a boat tour that was awesome. The ocean was fairly nice and the ride was smooth. On the way down to the ocean entry we saw many of the landmarks from a different angle which was beautiful. As we came up to the flow we had noticed that a large section of the lava bench had collapsed during the time that we hadn’t gone out. This is what we have been warning about because these bench collapses can happen without warning. The first ocean entry was steamy and we could see the lava pouring into the ocean every once in a while, but the second ocean entry was not as steamy and the lava could be seen much easier. This flow was amazing! We also saw a few surface flows that were flowing down the cliff near the first ocean entry. After viewing the lava, we headed back to the boat harbor and could see the moon making it’s way higher into the sky. What a beautiful night!

May 18, 19, 20 2013 Guided Lava Hike update

Aloha gang! Sorry for the inconvenience. We have been canceling our tours because of unstable weather North of our islands. This type of disturbance has caused our normal trades to stop and our southerly winds to play a big factor in our tours this week. These winds have made touring out to the flow a  health hazard. The gases from the ocean entry can restrict breathing abilities and also cause death if inhaled. These gases consist of hydrochloric acid and volcanic glass. Not something that you want to be breathing in.  We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience this may be causing, but safety is our top priority. Hopefully the winds will switch to be safe enough for us to resume our tours. Until next time , Aloha!

Here are some random photos for you to see….Aloha!

May 16,2013 Guided Lava Hike Update

Aloha! Inflation at the summit of Kilauea has made lava activity high on the coastal plains and also at the ocean entry area. Surface flows were active and  easily and safely approachable. Nice Pahoehoe flows and also little rivers of Lava were seen on the tour last night. Our tours were treated to a beautiful lavafall at the ocean entry. Lava spewed over the edge of a cliff and continued to flow on to the lava bench. Awesome ocean entry also. There were multiple ocean entries but the most eastern ocean entry was the most active one. All of our guests were extremely happy. Activity will still be high today because of continued inflation at the summit of Kilauea and Pu’u O’o crater. Come and join our tour today. Mahalo!
