Aloha Friday everyone!
Welcome to another end of the work week. Currently in the Kalapana area we are experiencing overcast skies, and intermittent showers. The County of Hawaii has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the State, this just means ‘conditions are favorable for flash flooding in flood prone areas, this usually happens when grounds are already saturated from recent rainfall.’
Flash Flood Watches make it a little difficult for us to make a decision on continuing with our Guided Tours. What we usually do is wait and see how the weather is like throughout the morning, and if it is usually raining, we cancel tours. This is for safety purposes, as this causes hazardous conditions. Once again there is still no active surface flow on the coastal plain, as flows continue to pop up on the Pulama Pali, which is where our Extreme Pali Hikes are venturing.
Now, on to the Guided Lava Tour that we had this past Wednesday with our MVG and OG Guides; Herbie and Andrew. They took out a group of 11 people, and had a great time. Herbie and Andrew were able to take our guests on the 2:30 PM Extreme Guided Lava Hike up close and personal to the surface flow. The sights and sounds were amazing. Our OG Guide, Andrew still has it in him! He and another OG Guide will be starting to take out Guided Lava Tours again. They will only be available for a limited time, and you may be lucky enough to take a tour with them. Actually, every one of our tour guides will give you a Lava Hiking Tour you’ll remember.
Our Guided Lava Hike yesterday went great, and they were able to find surface flow with Trevor as the guide. He had a smaller tour group, that just met the minimum requirement of 4 persons. Trevors Guided Tour was treated to the history of our Kalapana Area, and why we feel it is so special. Guests later jumped onto our tour van that took them to our private property starting point. From then on they were lead by Trevor for 10 miles (roundtrip), through the barren lava field, and up the Pulama Pali to the surface flow. Our guests were not disappointed once they reached their destination. Pictures to follow.
Have a great weekend, and we’ll be back on Monday!
